The deadlift is one of the most effective strength exercises for building overall body power. It primarily works the glutes, hamstrings, lower back, core, and upper back, while also improving grip strength.
How to Perform a Deadlift
Stand with your feet about hip-width apart.
Place the barbell close to your shins.
Hinge at your hips and bend your knees slightly.
Grip the bar just outside your legs.
Keep your back neutral and chest lifted.
Push through your feet and extend your hips to stand tall.
Lower the bar by pushing your hips back and maintaining control.
Common Mistakes
Rounding your back
Keeping the bar too far from your body
Using too much weight
Jerking the bar from the floor
Bending or overextending the lower back
Beginner Tip
Start with a light weight and focus on proper technique before increasing the load. Good form is more important than lifting heavy.
